The titles for the Saxon Math Homeschool textbooks can certainly be confusing! The trick is to concentrate on the second number to determine what is typically “on-grade level.”
- Saxon Math 5/4: struggling 5th grader/on level 4th grader
- Saxon Math 6/5: struggling 6th grader/on level 5th grader
- Saxon Math 7/6: struggling 7th grader/on level 6th grader
- Saxon Math 8/7: struggling 8th grader/on level 7th grader
Saxon Math Algebra 1/2, on the other hand, does not follow the above rule. It serves as a bridge between Pre-Algebra (8/7) and Algebra 1.
The titles for Saxon's "School Line" of books are also rather confusing. This is how those books are typically used:
- Intermediate 3- 3rd grade
- Intermediate 4 - 4th grade
- Intermediate 5 - 5th grade
- Course 1 - 6th grade
- Course 2 - 7th grade
- Course 3 - 8th grade
Remember, though, that it's more important to meet your student where they "are at" versus just picking the grade level they “should” be in. When in doubt, take the placement test and use it as a guide to help you decide which textbook your student should be using.
